King George V Athletics Stadium’s outdoor activities reopen on Monday, March 29, with customers being welcomed back to a rejuvenated track after it underwent a thorough deep clean during lockdown.
The Grimsby site’s synthetic athletics track is home to several local clubs who have been unable to train at the site since it was closed at the start of the first COVID lockdown.
During that time, North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) contracted specialist sports surfacing company, Playdeck UK Limited, to undertake a full clean enabling Lincs Inspire to reopen the stadium with a much-improved track.

We can’t wait to see our local athletics track back in use. It has been a year since the clubs were able to train at the site and we hope they are impressed with the improvement this track clean has made to their facilities whilst we’ve been unable to open.Rob Allison, Operations Manager, Lincs Inspire
The professional clean was essential given the many months of non-use due to covid, with the maintenance also improving traction and cushioning making it more forgiving, causing fewer injuries and accidents.
Engie, who maintain the public facilities on behalf of NELC, procured Playdeck UK and are also impressed with the professional, quality service provided from start to finish.
Dean Frost, DFG manager and building surveyor, Engie, said: “This was the first time the new track cleaning equipment has been used and it has exceeded expectations. The visual impact is clear for all to see. We are excited for training and events to resume. Local athletes and clubs will really benefit from this improvement.”
The facility’s AstroTurf football pitches will also reopen on Monday, March 29. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 5pm to 9pm. The reopening is subject to Government confirmation.
