Member, Linda Sankey, has set herself a challenge throughout February - to walk 1 kilometre every day to raise money for Dementia UK.
The Walk 1k a Day February challenge is designed to encourage people to make walking a habit and to help make a difference by supporting families facing dementia.
So far Linda has raised an amazing £250 through sponsorship and is completing the challenge at the Grimsby Health & Wellbeing Centre gym.
Linda said: “The best way for me to do this and to verify that I’ve done it is to do it on the treadmill. It’s easy enough. I walk at a pace of 4.5 kilometres an hour, so that’s just under 15 minutes of walking each day to cover the distance of 1 kilometre."

It does my legs good and will keep me fit as well. It’s something that everyone can do. One kilometre – anybody, of any age, can do. The staff have been brilliant. They’ve sponsored me and they are monitoring that I’m completing each kilometre!
LindaLinda uses the Wellness Hub in the Health & Wellbeing Centre daily and used the main gym prior to lockdown, regularly walking for fitness on the treadmill.
Linda added: “After lockdown I suffered greatly with pain in my legs and my knees, having not been able to keep up my exercising. I was so glad when everything reopened, and I could get back to using the assisted exercise equipment.
“Since I’ve been coming back regularly, my knees have been better, and I can use the stairs more easily. This challenge is ideal for me as it has got me back into the main gym, using the equipment like the treadmill."
Linda is walking for her husband who has mild dementia and for her aunt who had dementia and is no longer with us.
Good luck Linda! We’ll check in throughout the month and post an update at the end of February!
Walking for fitness
Walking is a great way to increase activity and fitness levels. As well as using the treadmills, Lincs Inspire also runs a wellbeing walk.
Led by our Sports Coaches, the group meets weekly on Thursdays at 9:30am, usually at the Thorpe Park car park that joins to the Meridian walkway.
The walk is free and no booking is required – just turn up.
