This month, Cleethorpes Library are celebrating the beauty in the world around us by recognising the work of sketcher, artist and seller, Sarah Palmer and her business The House with the Blue Door.
Sarah is one of several artists selling her work through The Shop, a recently opened gift shop at Cleethorpes Library. She captures scenes from Cleethorpes and Northern Lincolnshire through watercolours and inks that eventually are made into greetings cards, postcards and prints. Her distinctive and colourful style is characterised by light and quick pen strokes.
One of the products she sells is 'A Cleethorpes Sketchbook', a collection of watercolours created in 2020, the year of lockdown. Sarah writes "The beach reminded us that however locked-down we were in other parts of our lives we could still come to the sea, and the sands, and the sky, and be reminded of the infinite".
I have always been keen on art, but my career took me into teaching and journalism. Until March 2020 when I was furloughed. I'd had a difficult time before Lockdown, and something pulled me towards picking up my paintbrushes. It was the first time in my adult life that I had the time and space to be creative. I moved on from quick sketches to paintings of Cleethorpes beach, the Fitties (where I have a chalet) to Grimsby Town centre, and wider Lincolnshire as COVID restrictions allowed.
I work in watercolour and ink in a sketchbook, and my style is informed by my lifelong interest in calligraphy. In September 2020 I made the decision to combine my artwork with my chalet on the Fitties, and turn it into an art gallery with beds!Sarah Palmer

"We’re really pleased to be able to recognise the creative work of Sarah with this artist of the month award. Her sketches encourage us to stop and look at the world and enjoy the beauty around us. They celebrate the local area and all the things we have right on our doorstep in Cleethorpes and beyond!"
Sarah’s work is available to buy in The Shop at Cleethorpes Library, open during library hours Monday to Thursday 10am to 1pm, 2pm to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm.
