Touring exhibition The BFG in Pictures comes to the area
Issued: October 14, 2019
Lift the lid on the evolution of one of the most iconic characters in children’s literature at The BFG in Pictures, curated by one of Britain’s best loved illustrators Sir Quentin Blake.
The touring exhibition from House of Illustration arrives at Cleethorpes Library on Wednesday, October 30, thanks to funding from Arts Council England Libraries Fund. It includes reproductions of previously unseen early illustrations for one of Roald Dahl’s most popular stories.
These early designs will be exhibited alongside Blake’s later illustrations that ultimately accompanied Dahl’s story on its publication in 1982.
The contrast provides a fascinating insight into the collaboration between author and illustrator, as well as a glimpse of a BFG that might have been.
Quentin Blake, Illustrator and Founder of House of Illustration, commented:
“Roald was an extraordinarily interesting person and a man of action, which is why he was so good at telling stories. He liked to tell stories about things happening, rather than about what people were thinking or feeling, which was wonderful for me to draw.
“Roald’s The BFG was first published by Jonathan Cape in 1982 in a hardback edition for which I did black-and-white illustrations and a design in colour for the cover. Since then the BFG and Sophie have appeared in a variety of books and situations. For this exhibition I have selected images from different versions of the BFG, starting with my first illustrations which remained unpublished for thirty years.”
Rachel McWilliam, Arts Development Officer, Lincs Inspire said:
“We feel very proud, privileged and excited to be hosting this exhibition in The Albert Room at Cleethorpes Library. It’s great to be able to show the work of a world renowned illustrator for one Roald Dahl’s most popular stories, in a space that’s accessible for everyone in the locality.”
The exhibition is free to attend and runs in the Albert Room until Thursday, January 2, 2020 during library opening hours (Mon to Thurs 8:30am to 5:30pm, Sat 9am to 1pm, closed Fri and Sun).
Coinciding with the start of The BFG in Pictures is a talk by Olivia Ahmad from House of Illustration. The talk is aimed at an adult audience with an interest in illustration and the work of Quentin Blake, with a particular focus on the BFG.
Taking place on Friday, November 1 from 7:30pm in the Albert Room at Cleethorpes Library, the talk costs £3 to attend. Due to limited places, advanced booking is advised by calling the library on (01472) 323650.
Completing a trio of celebrations of drawing and illustration, Lincs Inspire welcome The Big Draw Festival to Cleethorpes Library on Saturday, October 19, 10am to 12 noon. This free drawing and art activity for children will this year be inspired by The BFG.
