Sports Day for People with Disabilities

An inclusive sports open day for people with disabilities takes place at Grimsby Leisure Centre health and wellbeing site on Wednesday, October 30.

Inspiring Lives is a weekly multi-sports activity and this open day invites anyone who has never been before to attend to enjoy an action-packed day of sport alongside regular members and support staff.

Ben Frary, Lincs Inspire’s senior sports development officer, said: “We’ve been running this programme for many years and it has grown from strength to strength.

“This open day is all about encouraging anyone who has never been before to come and try out a number of sports in the hope they’ll join us for our weekly Wednesday morning sessions.

“It’s a big family and everyone is here to support each other. Our open days are about celebrating sports and not letting someone’s disability hold them back.”

Lincs Inspire run the Inspiring Lives programme in partnership with Care Plus Group and the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust.

Activities at this month’s open day include badminton, boxing, basketball, adapted cycling, table cricket, inclusive gym and toning.

Jacqueline Balmer, Specialist Physiotherapist for the Adult Learning Disability Service, Care Plus Group, said: “Any person of any age with any disability are more than welcome to attend this unique and innovative session, not only does it encourage healthy activities and lifestyles but is also an excellent social network in order to support and encourage participation.

“The equipment available at the group, such as the hoist and fleet of adapted cycles, ensures that there is something for everyone.”

The Inspiring Lives Open Day runs from 9:30am to 2:30pm on Wednesday, October 30, at Grimsby Leisure Centre’s health and wellbeing site (original building). The event costs £5 per person, with carers attending for free. There is no need to book.
