90 years young and celebrating with friends from the chair based exercise class!
Issued: 13th May, 2019
Following his recent 90th birthday at the end of March, Reg Hawkins of Cleethorpes today celebrated reaching this milestone with friends from Grimsby Leisure Centre’s chair based exercise class!
Reg is a regular attendee at the weekly class, which he credits for increasing his confidence and improving his levels of exercise after suffering a stroke in 2014, which was closely followed by a heart attack. His stroke has left him weak on his left side, along with loss of hearing and double vision which has affected his balance. Following these health difficulties, Reg attended a stroke group for the previous two years and now attends the 45 minute weekly chair based exercise class at Grimsby Leisure Centre.
After exercising, many group members stay to enjoy a cup of tea and chat with other likeminded people. During this time, Reg was presented with his birthday cake by group lead and fitness instructor Ian Shorley Harlow.
Reg said: “Everyone attending the group is friendly and supportive of each other. We always have a good laugh and after hearing that my 90th birthday wasn’t far off, the group arranged this celebration. The group provides everyone the opportunity to exercise, socialise and build their confidence. When you are getting over a stroke it’s just want you want”.
The chair based exercise group meet every Monday morning at 10:30am to 11:15am for 45 minutes of seated exercises. The exercises are well suited for people managing long term health problems and many of those who attend previously attended a GP referred stroke group. All levels of ability and mobility are catered for, with exercises tailored to the individuals attending. Further details about the class can be found on our Activities and Events page.
