Footballers Using Fitness To Fight Fat

Issued: Wednesday, January 9, 2019

OVER 100 men have lost a total of 62 stone in a weight-loss scheme which helps men get back into exercising through playing football.

MAN v FAT Football kicked off its first season at Bradley Football Development Centre in September last year and has seen 14 league games played, helping local men tackle their weight issues.

The final weigh-in for season one will take place on Friday, January 11, before the teams head out to play their deciding matches. Results from Man v Fat are determined not just on the score on the pitch, but as a result of goal bonuses that teams earn from their weight loss.

Gary Precious, Lincs Inspire’s operational officer at Bradley Football Development Centre, said: “This is our first season of running Man V Fat and it’s been a great success. We’ve seen men from all walks of life, all ages and varying weights come together to play each week and everyone has lost weight.

“The teams play for a total of 30 minutes each week and for many, the scheme has helped spur them on into taking up other exercise, play football with their mates or in other leagues. There’s always great camaraderie between the players and teams and importantly it’s improving their health, lowering their chances of heart disease and other illnesses. The only thing players have to lose is weight!”

“I joined Man v Fat to give me the boost I needed to lose weight”, said Dean Capes, 52 and from Grimsby. “Being part of a team has given me the drive each week to lose weight because I don’t want to let my team mates down.

“Man v Fat helped me to lose weight but has also allowed me to make new friends which has been a great support. During the season I have lost 16.5kg which has been beneficial to my health.”

Season two

The second season of MAN v FAT Football starts on Friday, January 18 at Bradley Football Development Centre. It costs £25 per month and interested players can register at Anyone completing four weeks of the scheme will also qualify for a month’s free Lincs Inspire gym membership.
