Get creative with Su Blackwell Talk and Workshop

Renowned artist Su Blackwell is coming to Cleethorpes to give a talk and workshop in The Albert Room, Cleethorpes Library on Saturday 29th September 2018.

Su Blackwell works predominantly within the realm of paper. She is known for turning pages of second hand books into fantastical paper sculptures, which she has exhibited around the world.

From 12 noon to 12.45pm Su will be giving an Illustrated Talk where she will discuss her work and processes. The talk costs £5 and booking is advisable as places are limited.

She will be delivering a workshop from 2.30pm to 5.30pm, where she will lead you through this magical workshop, transforming a page of an unwanted book into a three-dimensional paper-cut rose, using a template, which Su has designed. Your finished design will make a wonderful gift for a friend, or for yourself. The workshop costs £30 per person which includes the illustrated talk before hand and materials. Booking is essential as places are limited.

Su says of her work: “I often work within the realm of fairy-tales and folk-lore. I began making a series of book-sculpture, cutting-out images from old books to create three-dimensional diorama’s, lighting them and then displaying them inside wooden boxes.”

She added: “For the cut-out illustrations, I tend to lean towards young-girl characters, placing them in haunting, fragile settings, expressing the vulnerability of childhood, while also conveying a sense of childhood anxiety and wonder. There is a quiet melancholy in the work, depicted in the material used, and choice of subtle colour.”

Su has designed art fabric for Liberty London, and the set for The Rose Theatre’s production of ‘The Snow Queen’. In December 2017 she exhibited a Dickens’ inspired installation at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire and is preparing for a solo show in London in Autumn 2018. Her illustrated book of fairy tales ‘The Fairytale Princess’, written by Wendy Jones, was published by Thames & Hudson and first released in 2012.

‘Su Blackwell’s talk and workshop kick start a two year programme of activities and events in The Albert Room at Cleethorpes Library for Lincs Inspire Arts and Libraries Development, thanks to grant funding from the Arts Council Libraries Fund’
