Pilgrim Swimming Club Celebrates 40 Years

Pilgrim Swimming Club celebrated their 40th anniversary in style at Immingham Swimming Pool recently with a fantastic display of lifesaving skills by the children and young people who are part of the club.

Mary Clark MBE, Swimming Instructor for Pilgrim Swimming Club, said: “The event was to celebrate 40 years of Pilgrim Swimming Club which is run totally by volunteers at Immingham Swimming Pool. It was also to showcase all the skills we teach on a weekly basis during term times.”

She added: “Pilgrim Swimming Club was set up 40 years ago we teach all Lifesaving skills, this helps increase confidence and well-being as well as leading young people into Lifeguarding and Swim Teaching. There are Lifeguards even now who came through the club.”

Pilgrim Swimming Club is heavily involved in contributing to the local community; they take part in Immingham in Bloom as well as raising money every year for children’s charities and local children with a disability. They have raised the impressive total of over £36,000 in last 13 years.

When asked what skills the group equips young people with, Mary replied: “Skills for young people are Drowning Prevention, the awareness of how dangerous water can be, Lifesaving Skills, Team work, responding to everyone’s needs and to be good ambassadors of the community. The children always respond well to all we ask of them.”

Speaking on the event itself, Mary said: “The celebration event was brilliant and not only did the children enjoy the event all the visitors and families too. We even had representatives from the Lincolnshire Branch and they were very impressed with what our club’s performance. For me it was a culmination of weeks of rehearsals and the children not only did the children do themselves proud but the club too.

“The children all received a new T-shirt from £1000 we were given by Tesco’s through the Bags of Help Scheme which was a thank you for all their hard work.”

Mary added: “Children can join Pilgrims by contacting either Mrs Lynne Holmes on 01469 519307 or myself on 01469 510922.”
