Disability Swimming Gala Is Fantastic Fun
Swimmers with additional needs took part in a fun-filled Disability Swimming Gala at Grimsby Leisure Centre on Monday 19th March.
Speaking on the event, Sue Over, Operational Lead for the Adult Learning Disability Therapy Team at Care Plus Group, said: “Twice a year we try to do an extraordinary event for the disabled swimmers in our groups. It adds some ‘competitive fun’ to the sessions which are run weekly at both Grimsby Leisure Centre Swimming Pool and Immingham Swimming Pool.”
Sue added: “Every single person that took part in the event faced new challenges. The effort and incredible determination that went in to each of the races was evident and people actually swam for the best part of an hour whereas in a normal weekly session they would have perhaps only achieved a small percentage of this time.”
When asked what participants get out of taking part in the Gala, Sue replied: “I feel they get out of the event the benefits of the exercise plus the social inclusion and friendships they make. They do not often experience the competitive elements of sports that maybe other able people would experience at some points in their lives. The carers certainly also feel they are seeing their cared for achieve new goals.”
“I just love the amount of smiling and laughing that happens for both the swimmers and the supporting staff.” – Sue Over
Sue said: “The NatWest Bank in Immingham have been very kind over the past few years to raise some funds that they have donated to the Immingham Swimming Group and we have been able to purchase some medals and trophies for the Gala, to add that special ingredient to it and make it worthwhile for the participants.”
Lucy Gray, Senior Sports Development Officer for Lincs Inspire, said:
“It was great to see so many smiling faces and everybody having so much fun, it really does show what a difference these groups make to people’s lives.”
Another Disability Swimming Gala at Immingham Swimming Pool is taking place Tuesday 22nd May 2018 from 10 am until 12 noon. People can just turn up or if they require more information they can ring the Learning Disability Service on (01472) 571120 or Immingham Swimming Pool on (01469) 516003.
There are weekly swimming sessions at Grimsby Leisure Centre Swimming Pool on a Monday from 9am to 11am and at Immingham Swimming Pool 10am until 12 noon.
The sessions are open to anyone with a disability and their carers. They are facilitated by a Therapist, Swimming Teacher and a Sports Coach, enabling people to learn to be water confident, learn to swim, have some exercise, relax and to have fun.
