North East Lincolnshire Archives Achieves National Accreditation

North East Lincolnshire Archives has been awarded Archive Service Accreditation.

Accredited Archive Services ensure the long-term collection, preservation and accessibility of our archive heritage. Accreditation is the UK quality standard which recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery. Achieving accredited status demonstrates that North East Lincolnshire Archives has met clearly defined national standards relating to management and resourcing; the care of its unique collections and what the service offers to its entire range of users.

Lincs Inspire, a registered charity, manages the North East Lincolnshire Archives, which houses original documents for this area dating from the 13th Century to the present day. The collections consist of the permanent records of the current and predecessor administrative authorities in northern Lincolnshire; the public records relating to the area; records of local businesses, people and of landed estates.

Steve Hipkins, Head of Cultural Services for Lincs Inspire, commented: “We are delighted to be shown to have reached the national standard for Archive Services after detailed submissions and external inspection from the National Archives which has examined every aspect of our service planning and delivery. We are very privileged to work with such wonderful collections and it is pleasing for our local communities to be assured that their archive heritage is in good hands.”

The Archive Service Accreditation Panel noted that recent progress has been rapid demonstrating the impact of the current Archivist, and that although many areas remained to be developed it was reassuring to see these reflected in planning, and the speed of improvement gave confidence in the capacity of the service to continue to address these known areas of need.

Cllr Jane Hyldon-King, portfolio holder with responsibility for the archives and library service, said: “This is a great achievement, and shows just how far Lincs Inspire have developed the service for our community. We know there’s still work to do, but the national accreditation shows we’re on the right track.”

North East Lincolnshire Archives are based within Grimsby Town Hall. The entrance to the Archives is through a side door on the east side of the building. The Archives are open to the public: Monday to Thursday, 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1pm to 4pm.
