Richard’s Active Forever Journey
Issued: Wednesday 3 May 2017
Listeners to Compass FM have been hearing about a very special mission set for the station’s Richard Lyon, as he aims to improve his health and wellbeing by joining Lincs Inspire’s Active Forever wellness scheme.
The Active Forever scheme is new for 2017 and is designed for over 55s or anyone with an ongoing health condition, regardless of their age, who would benefit from both physical and mental activity. The 12 week programme is packed with health and wellbeing activities individually designed to support a wide range of health conditions. We caught up with Richard to see how he’s getting on!
Richard, who’s finding the Active Forever programme ‘really good’ so far, has found the inclusivity of the programme to be one of its many positives. He explained: “I’ve never once felt uncomfortable and that’s the same chatting to the other ladies and gentlemen that use the facility nobody seems to feel uncomfortable at all, which sometimes is what you can get from going to an ordinary gym.”
He added: “You want an environment where you feel safe and also where you feel comfortable. I actually look forward to coming!”
When asked why Richard set out on his Active Forever journey to improve his health and wellbeing, Richard said: “I’ve got dilated cardiomyopathy, I’m a type two diabetic, my diabetic sugars have been high, constantly, and I was sick of the size I was. It was that reality check that we all get every now and again and I just felt I really needed to do something with my life, and already I’m reaping the benefits; feeling fitter, enjoying life more.”
Richard has felt much more energised since starting the programme, he explained: “There’s a bit of a spring in my step if I’m honest and that’s not happened in a long, long time, so that’s good. Compass FM listeners I’ve met over the last couple of weeks have been commenting at how well I look, which is a great feeling and proves it’s working.”
During his time of the Active Forever programme Richard has made the most of Grimsby Leisure Centre’s specialist Toning Suite which offers a relaxing and gentle form of exercise, ideal for rehabilitation, those not used to exercise, or those living with a long term illness or medical condition. The Suite is home to fourteen specially designed toning stations, all of which are adjusted to individual needs. Now he plans to utilise a wide variety of Lincs Inspire’s facilities.
When asked whether he’d encourage others to do the same and join the Active Forever programme Richard replied: “Absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, it’s a bit of a cliché to say it’s changed my life, but actually I think it’s really put me on the right path to change my life!”
Richard is keen not to undo all his hard work, he explained: “You become more conscious of what you’re putting in your mouth, i.e. food and your lifestyle like that, and actually there’s no point in me coming here then getting fast food or anything like that on the way out.
“I think if you’re at the stage where you’re looking forward to coming, that’s testament alone. This scheme is absolutely bullseye for the people I see coming who are a wide variety of ages, it’s not just old people, it’s not just young people, it’s not just people with disabilities. It caters for a wide range of people. It’s one of the most effective things I’ve seen and the staff really help.”
He added: “I’ve never seen the place so busy, it’s brilliant, it really is a good vibe!”
Wellbeing activities are available across Lincs Inspire venues including Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, Grimsby Leisure Centre, King George V Stadium, Immingham Swimming Pool, Bradley Football Development Centre, as well as Lincs Inspire Libraries, so you can find the activities and venues that are right for you.
