Inclusive Sports Open Day

Issued: Friday 9 September 2016

An Inclusive Sports Open Day is being held on Wednesday 14th September at Grimsby Leisure Centre (Rink Side) as part of Lincs Inspire’s Inspiring Lives programme, in conjunction with the Adult Learning Disability Service, Care Plus Group.

The session, which runs from 9.30am to 2.30pm, offers a wide variety of inclusive activities for users to enjoy and the opportunity to try out a variety of sports such as table cricket, ice-skating, trampolining, adapted cycles and more. The session costs £5 per person with free entry for carers.

The Inclusive Sports Open Day is open to anyone with a disability whether they are a wheelchair user or not, and their family, friends and carers regardless of age or ability.

Ben Frary, Disability Sports Coordinator for Lincs Inspire, explained: “The Inclusive Sports Open Day provides an opportunity for users to engage in a variety of sports and activities which will hopefully open new avenues into long term participation within sport and physical activity. The day brings together a variety of different organisations and coaches to deliver various activities including adapted cycles, ice-skating, gymnastics, table cricket, trampolining and many more. It is hoped that this day will encourage more disabled people to engage in an active and healthy lifestyle, as well as providing greater opportunities through new exit routes in a number of different sports.”

The project, funded through Sport England’s Inclusive Sport programme was born out of the success of London 2012 and the area’s very own Disability Games. Inspiring Lives brings together Lincs Inspire’s sports and leisure services making them inclusive for all and helps those with any form of disability or impairment to more easily participate in sport and fitness safely.

Working closely in partnership with the Adult Learning Disability Service from the Care Plus Group   and the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, Lincs Inspire deliver a number of weekly activities across their centres for people with disabilities and the activities are proving extremely popular with all involved.

Lincs Inspire is focused on inspiring local people to achieve their aspirations, develop new skills, and keep active, and the disability sports taster days are a great way to keep try out a new sport and have fun.
