Lincs Inspire Sports Development team have been delivering Bikeability in schools across North East Lincolnshire since 2012.
Bikeability is the 21st Century Cycle Proficiency, teaching participants practical skills and understanding, giving them the confidence to cycle safely on today’s roads.
There are three levels to Bikeability, each designed to improve cycling skills and knowledge.
This is a playground-based training course, after which successful participant’s progress to Level 2 on-the-road training.
This level includes starting and stopping, junctions, safe riding positions and teaches participants to be confident and assertive in light traffic situations, such as the journey to and from school. This level also gives the knowledge of the Highway Code.
Training which is aimed at cyclists who may need to navigate heavier traffic such as town centre, roundabouts and multiple carriageways. We deliver this training to secondary aged pupils and local businesses.
Safety is priority
Every Bikeability course is risk assessed and route checks are carried out. High visibility vests are worn and loan bikes are available for children who don’t have their own, as are safety helmets. Children are awarded certificates for their hard work and achievements when passing each part of the course.
Our coaches are also busy during the school holidays helping children learn to ride their bike or to improve their confidence in cycling. Schools are welcome to share our holiday activity information with parents, which will be provided to schools prior to each half term.
